"WAVES OF KNOWING: SURFING AND
EMPIRE IN THE PACIFIC"
(VLPA)
THIS COURSE EXAMINES THE ENTANGLED
RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE MODERN
SPORT OF SURFING, INDIGENOUS
PRACTICES OF WAVE RIDING, AND
EMPIRE IN THE PACIFIC. GROUNDED IN
CREATIVE TEXTS, FILM, AND SPORTS
AND CULTURAL STUDIES, THIS COURSE
WILL INTERROGATE THE WAYS IN WHICH
MODERN SURFING REENACTS
NEOCOLONIAL FORMS OF POWER AND
INDIGENOUS DISPOSSESSION IN
PACIFIC COASTAL REGIONS. THE
COURSE INCLUDES THE OPPORTUNITY TO
SPEAK WITH A MAORI SURF ACTIVIST
AND A VOLUNTARY FIELD TRIP TO
WESTPORT, WASHINGTON.
