UNDERWORLD POETICS (AH) IS A COURSE
THAT
ULTIMATELY AIMS TO THROW A POETRY
SLAM. SO, IT INVITES ALL THOSE
INTERESTED IN WRITING AND SHARING
THEIR OWN POETRY. BUT IN ORDER TO
PREPARE STUDENTS FOR A POETRY SLAM,
IT ASKS THEM TO READ, ANALYZE, AND
DISCUSS SOME OF THE POETRY AND
POETIC THEORIES OF PREDOMINATELY
CARIBBEAN-BORN WRITERS, SUCH AS
AUDRE LORDE. IT ALSO ASKS STUDENTS
TO THINK ABOUT WHAT IT MEANS TO
WRITE POETRY FROM A DISTINCTIVELY
UNDERWORLD PERSPECTIVE BY READING
SECTIONS OF THE AMERICAN ARCHETYPAL
PSYCHOLOGIST, JAMES HILLMAN, THE
DREAM AND THE UNDERWORLD.
