EXPLORES CONCEPTS SUCH AS LANGUAGE
DEATH, BIRTH, POLITICS,
STANDARDIZATION, AND CODIFICATION.
RELATION BETWEEN DIALECT AND LANGUA
IS OBSERVED IN AN ECOLOGY EXHIBITIN
ETHNIC AND RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY.
Syllabus Description (from Canvas):
The course examines the fates of the language known as Serbo-Croatian, on the one hand, and, on the other, of the languages known as Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin, and Serbian. Concepts such as language death and language birth are explored. The relation between the concepts of dialect and language is analyzed. Notions of language politics, language standardization, and language emancipation in Southeastern Europe are analyzed.
