"VIDEOGAMES AGAINST THE MACHINE" (VLPA, I&S) THIS COURSE INTRODUCES STUDENTS TO VIDEOGAMES AS EXPRESSIVE MEDIA, MOVING BEYOND THEIR CULTURAL FUNCTION AS ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGIES TO EXPLORE THEIR SIGNIFICANCE AS AESTHETIC CATALYST FOR SUBVERSIVE THOUGHT, FEELING AND PERCEPTION IN THE DIGITAL AGE. WHILE VIDEOGAMES CAN REPRODUCE HABITUAL SENSIBILITIES OF SOCIAL ORDER, THIS COURSE FOCUSES ON THEIR CAPACITY TO ENGAGE GAYATRI SPIVAK'S CRITICAL REFORMULATION OF AESTHETIC EDUCATION AS "THE TRAINING OF THE IMAGINATION FOR CONSTRUCTION OF THINGS TO KNOW...FOR ALTERNATIVE EPISTEMOLOGICAL PERFOMANCE."
