THE QUESTION OF HUMAN NATURE
(VLPA)
LITTLE HAS DEFINED MODERNITY MORE
CENTRALLY THAN STRUGGLES OVER WHO
AND WHAT GET COUNTED AS HUMAN.
STRUGGLES OVER THE BOUNDARIES OF
THE HUMAN HAVE LONG BEEN WAGED
THROUGH CULTURAL MEDIUMS, INCLUDING
LITERATURE, VISUAL ART AND FILM.
THIS COURSE EXAMINES HOW WORKS OF
CULTURE PRODUCE COMPETING ACCOUNTS
OF THE HUMAN AND WHAT'S AT STAKE IN
THE DIFFERENT WAY THAT THE CATEGORY
OF HUMAN HAS BEEN IMAGINED,
CONTESTED AND REFUSED. COURSE TEXTS
INCLUDE NEOSLAVE NARRATIVES, CYBORG
MANIFESTOS, PRISON AUTOBIOGRAPHIES,
MARINE SCIENCE MUSINGS, GHOST
STORIES, SPACE POETRY AND MORE.
Catalog Description:
Considers the relationship between the individual and his/her culture. Traces the evolution of the notion of human nature in Europe and the United States and compares this tradition with representations of the human being from other cultural traditions.
