"UTOPIAS GONE AWRY: CONFLICT AND PARADISE IN THE BLACK SEA REGION" IN THIS COURSE WE WILL EXPLORE THE CULTURES, HISTORY, AND CURRENT GEOPOLITICAL SITUATION OF THE COUNTRIES SURROUNDING THE BLACK SEA.THE ENTIRE REGION IS OFTEN CONSIDERED AN EXTENDED BORDER BETWEEN EUROPE AND ASIA, AND HAS BEEN A SITE OF CONTINUOUS MIGRATIONS AND FLUCTUATING NATIONAL IDENTITIES. WE WILL ACCESS SPECIFIC TOPICS - FROM THE CONCEPT OF BORDERS ZONES, TO THE NUCLEAR DISASTER OF CHERNOBYL, WOMEN'S RIGHTS, AND MORE - THROUGH FILMS AND LITERATURE FROM BULGARIA, ROMANIA, UKRAINE, RUSSIA, GEORGIA, AND TURKEY. SEMINAR DISCUSSIONS WILL BE SUPPLEMENTED BY LECTURES ON THE REGION'S COMPLEX HISTORY, AND ITS ROLE IN WORLD POLITICS. OFFERED VIA REMOTE LEARNING
