This class is a low-stakes discussion group class where we will be investigating the curious phenomenon that is cancel culture, how it evolved, and what we can learn from it. In this class, we are going to examine controversial statements made by contemporary public figures such as Kanye West and Azalia Bankes. We also will take a look at the cancelation of historical figures like Christopher Columbus, Mother Teresa, Dr. Suse, and more. In true CHID nature, I will challenge students to think beyond the binaries of good and bad to help us better understand the complicated webs of cancel culture. We will also take a broader study of celebrity culture and discuss conspiracies such as the Illuminate, lizard people, and more. The goal is to emerge from this course with a more critical lens of whom we "pedestalize" as public figures and what standards we hold them to. In a world where fame can find somebody overnight who gets to make the rules on how they should behave.
