Earlier this quarter I received an e-mail from the office of financial aid informing me that I was being considered for a need based scholarship.  Given that my wife works full time and I part-time, I was surprised that the school thought to supplement my school funding.  I was skeptical at first due to the fact that I had applied for scholarships before and never received one.  Despite this, I talked to the financial aid office and filled out their on-line survey which was composed of personal information questions and short essays.  I am glad that I did not disregard this offer as on November 30th I received another e-mail informing me that I had received the George H. King Scholarship for academic achievement.  While this scholarship has rewarded me with $8700, this scholarship has a great deal of significance for me.

Before beginning college in the summer of 2007, I visited Japan.  With this money I will be traveling to Japan next summer as part of my CHID capstone project to finish my undergraduate degree.  The time I put into applying for this scholarship was minimal, but the return goes far beyond the monetary value.

Thanks,
Gary Walsh
